P&L modeling and valuation

Context

This model facilitates high-stakes decision-making for commercial and operational transformations. It is designed to handle the complexity of strategy consulting—where financial, personnel, and environmental criteria meet rigorous error checking.

Typical strategy consulting models have:

  • Multiple data inputs, often coming from manually extracted data sources that require cleaning.
  • Complex non-linear logic with multiple "branches", that often could be models by themselves
  • Many assumptions, sometimes multi-layered, that need to be tested.
  • Complex scenarios combining assumptions in many different ways.
  • Output dashboards and scenario comparison features, to help iterate quickly on results.

Model objectives

This template simulates a company transformation plan impacting both revenue and costs of a mid-size company. It allows to:

  • Forecast profit: Project financial outcomes based on operational changes.
  • Define assumptions: Adjust revenue and cost assumptions across geographies, products, and departments.
  • Analyze scenarios: Assess result variations across a range of realistic strategic scenarios to assist in decision-making.
  • Validate impact: Present clear financial projections to test realism and project value.

Structure and mechanics

Built primarily using River, the model flows through the following logic:

  • Revenue module: Breaks down growth assumptions by market and geography.
  • Gross margin: Incorporates purchasing program impacts per scenario.
  • Operating costs: detailed cost breakdown with steady growth assumptions differing by cost type.
  • Financial output: Forecasts P&L down to EBIT (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes), with Net Income calculated via standard Excel formulas (as illustration).
